  • Data Brokers: This is a multi-billion dollar industry that operates largely in the shadows. Data brokers specialize in collecting, aggregating, and selling personal information. They purchase datasets from apps, websites, and other sources, then combine them to build intricate profiles on millions of individuals. These profiles, which can include inferred health conditions (e.g., a person who buys diabetic supplies online is likely diabetic), are then sold to advertisers, insurers, employers, or even political campaigns.
  • Advertisers and Marketers: The primary currency of the modern internet is targeted advertising. Health data allows for hyper-specific targeting.
